Life Insurance Isn’t Just for Parents—Here’s Why I Got It Anyway
A lot of people think life insurance is only for those with kids or someone who depends on them financially. But that’s not always the case. The real question to ask is—who would be financially impacted if I were no longer here?
I don’t have children or direct dependents, but I’m the Primero in my family, the one paving the way. Which also means that I’m my parents’ retirement plan. And while I have siblings who could step in, I carry the bigger share of responsibility.
So when I reviewed my finances, that question hit me: Who would be impacted?
If you're a Primero, even if you don’t have children, consider who might rely on your income now or in the future, a sibling, a tía or tío, a primo or prima, or your parents. Life insurance isn’t just for traditional family setups, it’s a tool to protect the ones you support.
And don’t forget about your partner. If something were to happen to you, they could suddenly find themselves short on the income you were contributing, both now and in the future. Beyond the financial hit, they may also need time away from work to grieve and adjust.
Even if you're not currently working, you're still contributing in other important ways, managing the household, caregiving, or simply showing up with your time and energy. All of that holds value, and your absence would create a real gap that they'd likely need help filling.
